The University's football stadium was built in 1936 and was one of 65 Works Progress Administration projects built in Ohio that year. Originally known as University Stadium, it was constructed entirely with manual labor, with workers using shovels, picks, and wheelbarrows. The stadium was empty from 1942-1945, as football had been discontinued due to World War II, and the facility fell into disrepair as a result. It was re-named the Glass Bowl in 1946 due to the efforts of Wayne Kohn, a Libbey-Owens-Ford employee who had the idea to use glass – a major industry in Toledo – for the stadium's renovations. The Glass Bowl Dedication Game was played on December 7, 1946, with the Rockets defeating Bates College 21-12.
