<strong>Exhibit Labels:</strong><br /><br />[1] Letter from President Nixon to President Carlson (1970). The 1960s and 1970s were marked by unrest at colleges throughout the country. This letter from Nixon to Carlson warns against agitators attempting to stir up violence on college campuses.<br /><br /> [2] Groundbreaking Ceremony for Phase II of Student Union Expansion. (1970). An increase in enrollment in the early 1960s resulted in a need for more facilities on campus. It also necessitated an expansion of the Student Union. This expansion was done in two phases, with phase II being completed in 1972.<br /><br />[3] William S. Carlson Library Groundbreaking (1970). President William S. Carlson prepares to toss a shovel of dirt during the groundbreaking of the new library building. The library was named for President Carlson after a unanimous vote by the Board of Trustees during a special meeting in 1972. At the time, Carlson Library was the most expensive single construction project undertaken by the University, and was the second-largest building on campus, surpassed only by University Hall.
