LGBTQ Activism
Abstract
This chapter documents the LGBTQ Rights Movement from the Stonewall riots in 1969, which were instrumental in mobilizing gay activist groups, through the empowering 1970s which saw the first openly gay public official elected to office and the blockage of California’s Proposition 6 which would have banned homosexuals from teaching in public schools, to the sobering 1980s and the AIDs epidemic, which increased stigma and discrimination for LGBTQ groups.
Description
This chapter documents the LGBTQ Rights Movement from the Stonewall riots in 1969, which were instrumental in mobilizing gay activist groups, through the empowering 1970s which saw the first openly gay public official elected to office and the blockage of California’s Proposition 6 which would have banned homosexuals from teaching in public schools, to the sobering 1980s and the AIDs epidemic, which increased stigma and discrimination for LGBTQ groups. The 1990s and 2000s included both achievements and setbacks, establishing safe spaces but also seeing bans from military duty. In 2015, a landmark case, Obergefell v. Hodges, declared gay marriage a constitutional right. Collections represented in this exhibit include:
