In 1917, President Stowe made a controversial decision to hire Scott Nearing as professor of economics and dean of the College of Arts and Sciences in 1915. Seen as the spokesperson for the working classes of Toledo, Nearing was nationally known and often sought after for speaking engagements. However, with the United States on the verge of entering Workd War I and the fear of Socialism on the rise, conservative groupsof the city considered Nearing too radical and influential. After his house was raided and papers confiscated, Nearing was dismissed from his position in 1917.
