<strong>Exhibit labels:</strong><br /><br />[1] FIRST COLLEGE ESTABLISHED: College of Pharmacy. On June 27, 1904, the Board of Directors of the University of the City of Toledo acquired control of the Toledo Medical College and adopted a resolution to establish the Departments of General Culture, Medicine, and Pharmacy. William McK. Reed served as the first dean of the college. <br /><br />[2] FIRST LIBRARIAN: Miss Mellie M. Smith. Miss Mellie Smith was appointed acting librarian upon the establishment of the Library, which occupied a classroom on the first floor of the Eleventh and Illinois Street building and housed 3,500 books. <br /><br />[3] FIRST STUDENT ORGANIZATION ON CAMPUS: Cresset Fraternity (Pi Kappa Alpha), 1915. Revived interest in the University of Toledo due to the recently formed College of Arts and Letters led to an influx of students in 1914, four of whom met at the YMCA in October 1915 to form a secret organization. The Cresset Fraternity sought to create student interest in campus life, and served as the predecessor to Pi Kappa Alpha. <br /><br />[4] FIRST TEASER ISSUE HEADLINE: "Council's Investigation Created Surprise: City Fathers Find Out Something About Toledo University." The Toledo Universi-Teaser debuted on March 5th, 1919 with student Leo Steinem as its editor. From Universi-Teaser to the Independent Collegian, this student-run newspaper kept the students and the community informed of university events until it ceased publication in 2019.
