Abstract/Description: | Coal produces coke when heated in the absence of air. Coke is indispensable in separating iron from the iron ore. It acts not only has the heat source in the blast furnace, but also as a reducing agent aiding in the iron's release. Iron can then be casted into products such as engine blocks, iron pipes, and manhole covers. It is also the main ingredient in steel production, where adjustments to carbon content, and mixtures with other alloys can create steels with differing properties. |
