Centennial Mall and Spirit Rock
Abstract/Description: | CENTENNIAL MALL - Year of Construction: 1978; $800,000. Architects: The Collaborative, Inc. Centennial Mall covers 9.2 acres in between University Hall, Memorial Field House, the Student Union, the Snyder and Engineering- Science Buildings, Ritter Observatory, and Gillham Hall. The purpose of the Mall was to tie the campus together, as it was previously occupied by a large parking lot, which was replaced by the East and West Ramps. The Mall was part of UToledo's ''Decade of Development'', the first phase of which was the $5 million Centennial Fund campaign. After money was raised through a drive administered by the Campus Beautification Committee, construction began in September of 1977, with major portions of the Mall to be completed by 1978. The Mall was dedicated during the homecoming celebration of the 1980 ball season. SPIRIT ROCK - Originally located by the Student Union, Spirit Rock was relocated to the valley in 1970. It serves as a landmark for student organizations. The rock has three rules: It can only be painted during dusk hours; No brown and orange paint; No profanity; The rock's purpose remains to increase school spirit and has become a way to highlight social issues such as BLM, memorials, and other issues that students feel strongly about. |
