Toledoan and jazz legend Jon Hendricks returned to UToledo after attending as a student 50 years prior to become the University’s first Distinguished Professor of Jazz. Known as the father of "vocalese", Hendricks inspired generations of jazz musicians. [2] Vik Kapoor resigns presidency (2000). A year and a half after the former dean of engineering became president, amid fallout from his reorganization of the University, Vik Kapoor resigned at the encouragement of the Board of Trustees. Vice President for Finance, William Decatur, served as interim president until Daniel Johnson was selected as the 15th President of the University of Toledo. [3] The University of Toledo hosts its first human trafficking conference (2004). Sponsored by the College of Health and Human Services, the first human trafficking conference hosted researchers across the nation to explore the decriminalization of prostitution. The conference continues to be held each year as the International Human Trafficking and Social Justice Conference, and brings in attendees from 50 states and more than 47 countries. [4] The Disability Studies Program is established (2001-2002). In 2001, the Ability Center of Greater Toledo gifted the University of Toledo with $1.9 million for the establishment of a disability studies program by supporting a three-year professorship and four-year plan to create an endowed chair in the discipline. At the time, Dr. Patricia Murphy was teaching the University's first disability studies course as part of the women's and gender studies department. The program initially only offered a minor; it took ten years to offer a major in the discipline. [5] Dr. Lloyd Jacobs becomes the sixth president of the Medical College of Ohio and sixteenth president of the University of Toledo (2004 and 2006). Vascular surgeon, previously of the University of Michigan Medical School, Dr. Jacobs was selected as president of MCO after a 10-month search. He was instrumental in the merger of MCO and UToledo in 2006 and took up the post of University of Toledo's sixteenth president when President Daniel Johnson stepped down. |
