Non-invasive polarimetric apparatus and method for analyte sensing in birefringent media
A noninvasive polarimetric apparatus used to measure levels of a substance in a sample in the presence of dynamically changing sample birefringence is provided. A polarization system generates multiple states of polarized light which interact with the sample. An analyzer system receives a signal from the sample and generates a secondary signal. This signal is detected and then processed to measure levels of a substance in a sample that may be have time varying birefringent components.
Materials related to sodium/potassium adenosine triphosphatase and Src
This invention is based in part on the elucidation of new structural conformations and functions of the sodium/potassium adenosine triphosphate synthase (Na/K ATPase), and especially elucidation of new binding sites and interactions. The present invention provides practical applications of several surprising structural and functional relationships between Na/K ATPase and compounds which interact with Na/K ATPase. Disclosure of these structures and relationships provides insight and practical solutions to chemically affecting not only the Na/K ATPase interactions, but also regulators known to be upstream and downstream.

Methods for synthesizing glycinols, glyceollins I and II, compositions of selected intermediates, and therapeutic uses thereof
Two distinct methods are disclosed and claimed for synthesizing glyceollin I plus glyceollin II as a mixture and as their pure forms. Stereochemical isomers and various synthetic intermediates are also synthesized and claimed for their novel compositions of matter. All compounds and their mixtures are claimed for use in formulations that are useful to treat or prevent cancer, or that have utility as selective estrogen receptor modulators, such formulations including enhanced or medical foods, dietary supplements and ethical pharmaceutical agents.

Biomass pretreatment
The present invention relates to a method for lignocellulosic conversion to sugar using an ionic liquid pretreatment for the saccharification of lignocellulosic biomass. Thus, cellulose, hemicellulose, when hydrolyzed into their sugars, can be converted to ethanol fuel through well-established fermentation technologies. These sugars also form the feedstocks for production of a variety of chemical and polymers. The complex structure of the biomass required pretreatment to enable efficient saccharification of cellulose and hemicellulose components to their constituent sugars.
Trianionic ligand precursor compounds and uses thereof in constrained geometry catalysts
Trianionic ligand precursor compounds, catalyst systems containing the precursor compounds, and uses of the precursor compounds are described. The present invention also provides constrained geometry catalysts, methods to make the constrained geometry catalysts and methods to use the constrained geometry catalysts in various reaction systems, including polymerization, metathesis reactions, and hydroamination reactions.
Flexible photovoltaic cells having a polyimide material layer and method of producing same
A photovoltaic cell is fabricated onto a polyimide film using an unbalanced RF magnetron sputtering process. The sputtering process includes the addition of 0.05% to 0.5% oxygen to an inert gas stream. Portions of the photovoltaic cell are exposed to an elevated temperature CdCl2 treatment which is at or below the glass transition temperature of the polyimide film.

Nanoelectric memristor device with dilute magnetic semiconductors
A nanoelectric memristor device includes a first electrode and a layer of oxygen-vacancy-rich metal oxide deposited upon a surface of the first electrode. A layer of oxygen-rich/stochiometric metal oxide is deposited upon a surface of the oxygen-vacancy-rich metal oxide layer that is opposite from said first electrode. At least one of the oxygen-vacancy-rich metal oxide and oxygen-rich/stochiometric metal oxide layers is doped with one of a magnetic and a paramagnetic material. A second electrode is adjacent to a surface of the oxygen-rich/stochiometric metal oxide layer that is opposite from the oxygen-rich/stochiometric metal oxide layer.
High frame rate imaging system
A system for producing an image using an imaging system includes a) transmitting at least one signal of energy toward an object to be imaged by using two transmitters having the same output amplitude but of an opposite sign, or by using one transmitter to perform the task; b) exciting at least one transducer element to produce limited-diffraction array beams or their square-wave approximations with two levels of quantitations for both sine and cosine functions, c) weighting the received signals spatially with limited-diffraction array beams, their square-wave approximations, or spatial Fourier transform, and d) digitizing and then transferring received signals through high-speed optical fibers to a system for image reconstructions.

A method for synthesizing anti-leukemic epothilone analogues includes rigidifying a region between the macrolactone ring and the aromatic side-chain. The anti-leukemic compositions are non-naturally occurring epothilone analogue that are rigidified between the macrolactone ring and the aromatic side-chain.

Pedicle screw assembly having a retractable screw tip for facilitating the securement of the pedicle screw assembly to a spinal vertebra
A pedicle screw assembly has a retractable screw tip that facilitates the securement of the pedicle screw assembly to a spinal vertebra in a minimally invasive fashion during an orthopedic surgical procedure. The pedicle screw assembly includes a body portion including a head and a shank. The shank includes an outer surface with a thread provided thereon, an end having a cutting tip provided thereon, and a bore extending inwardly from the end and having an internally threaded region provided therein. The pedicle screw assembly also includes a tip portion including a body having a cutting edge and a shank extending from the body. The shank has an externally threaded region provided thereon that cooperates with the internally threaded region of the bore to permit movement of the tip portion relative to the body portion between extended and retracted positions.
Unidirectional rotatory pedicle screw and spinal deformity correction device for correction of spinal deformity in growing children
A scoliosis correction device includes a first fixed anchor that is adapted to be secured to a vertebra of a spine and a second fixed anchor that is adapted to be secured to a vertebra of a spine. A rotatory anchor includes a head portion, a shank portion that extends from the head portion and is adapted to be secured to a vertebra of a spine, and a sprocket that is supported on the head portion for rotational movement relative thereto. A cable extends from the first fixed anchor to the rotatory pedicle screw to the second fixed anchor. The rotatory anchor may be configured to allow unidirectional movement of the sprocket relative to the head portion. A rigid member may extend between the fixed anchor and an intermediate anchor.
Needle for directional control of the injection of bone cement into a vertebral compression fracture
A needle for use in a surgical procedure includes an outer cannula including a shaft portion having a side wall and an end wall. A first aperture extends through the side wall of the outer cannula, and a second aperture extending through the end of the outer cannula. The needle also includes an inner cannula that is disposed within the outer cannula and includes a shaft portion having a bore extending therethrough. The inner cannula is selectively movable relative to the outer cannula between a first orientation and a second orientation. In the first orientation, communication is provided between the bore of the inner cannula and a first external region that is located adjacent to the second end of the outer cannula. In the second orientation, communication is provided between the bore of the inner cannula and a second external region that is located adjacent to the second end of the outer cannula.
Core muscle strengthening
The method and system of this invention provides for core muscle strengthening. The method comprises the step of: providing an apparatus (10) that provides resistance and assistance during core muscle training using dynamic therapeutic movement for chest, back, abdominal and leg musculature to strengthen and condition muscles of the axial skeleton and lower extremities of a performing user. In one embodiment, the method also is for non-invasive physical therapy.
