Insertion assembly for minimally invasive spinal surgery
A telescopic insertion assembly is configured to insert a pedicle screw into a vertebral body. The insertion assembly includes an attachment fixture having one end configured to mate with the pedicle screw and another end having a ridged portion. A center tube is provided having one end slidably attached to the attachment fixture and another end having an internally ridged portion. A telescoping member has one ridged end configured to slidably attach to the center tube and another end having a yoke. The telescoping member is configured to extend the yoke to different distances from the center tube. An alignment member is configured to hingeably attach to the yoke of the telescoping member. The alignment member is configured to rotate from a first position to a second position. The second position of the alignment member is above a top surface of a patient's skin.
Methods for forming peptides and peptide conjugates and peptides and peptide conjugates compositions formed thereby
Methods for building peptide chains containing sulfonyl modified amines at the N-terminus, or, within amino acid side chains, of a growing peptide in a solid-phase peptide synthesis are described. Further, compositions having a sulfonyl modified amine attached to the N-terminus, or within an amino acid side chain, of a polypeptide containing three or more amino acid residues are described.
Cervical plate assembly
A cervical plate assembly facilitates the fusion of cervical vertebrae by quickly and easily causing the vertebrae to exert a preloading force against a bone graft interposed therebetween. A cervical plate assembly also facilitates the installation of the cervical plate assembly in an orthopedic surgical procedure by providing both a locking mechanism that positively retains one or more fasteners thereto and a viewing window that results in an unobstructed view of the vertebrae and the bone graft.
Non-invasive ocular analyte sensing system
A noninvasive method and apparatus for determining analyte concentration (e.g., glucose) in a subject that includes measuring light refraction from at least a portion one or more structures. One example of such structure is the subject's iris.
Materials and methods related to sodium/potassium adenosine triphosphase and cholesterol
This invention is based in part on the elucidation of new structural conformations and functions of the sodium/potassium adenosine triphosphate synthase (Na/K ATPase), and especially elucidation of new binding sites and interactions. The present invention provides practical applications of several surprising structural and functional relationships between Na/K ATPase and compounds which interact with Na/K ATPase. Disclosure of these structures and relationships provides insight and practical solutions to chemically affecting not only the Na/K ATPase interactions, but also regulators known to be upstream and downstream.
Back contact buffer layer for thin-film solar cells
A photovoltaic cell structure is disclosed that includes a buffer/passivation layer at a CdTe/Back contact interface. The buffer/passivation layer is formed from the same material that forms the n-type semiconductor active layer. In one embodiment, the buffer layer and the n-type semiconductor active layer are formed from cadmium sulfide (CdS). A method of forming a photovoltaic cell includes the step of forming the semiconductor active layers and the buffer/passivation layer within the same deposition chamber and using the same material source.
Core muscle strengthening
The method and system of this invention provides for core muscle strengthening. The method comprises the step of: providing an apparatus (10) that provides resistance and assistance during core muscle training using dynamic therapeutic movement for chest, back, abdominal and leg musculature to strengthen and condition muscles of the axial skeleton and lower extremities of a performing user. In one embodiment, the method also is for non-invasive physical therapy.
Trunk rotation
This trunk rotation device uses dynamic movement of one's body such as, shoulder, hip, knee, back, thigh, and abdominal musculature. The device provides a method for exercising the spinal column and the muscles of the torso, including those in the abdominal lumbar and thoracic regions involving rotational torque. In a preferred embodiment, the device is a golf exercise and flexibility apparatus. The golf exercise apparatus provides resistance to a golfer during a golf swing to strengthen and condition the muscles of the axial skeleton of the golfer in a functional posture.

Removable anchoring pedicle screw
A removable anchoring pedicle screw includes an implant mounting screw, an anchor screw, and a nose piece. The anchor screw is configured to be rotated relative to the implant mounting screw such that the nose piece engages an expandable anchor. The expandable anchor is disposed between the implant mounting screw and the nose piece such that rotation of the anchor screw relative to the implant mounting screw causes expansion of the expandable anchor.
Method for selecting a treatment for non-small cell lung cancer using gene expression profiles
The present invention identifies and quantifies changes in gene expression associated with non-small cell lung cancer NSCLC by examining gene expression in tissue from normal lung and diseased lung. The present invention also identifies and quantifies expression profiles which serve as useful diagnostic markers as well as markers that are useful to monitor disease states, disease progression, drug toxicity, drug efficacy and drug metabolism.
Non-invasive polarimetric apparatus and method for analyte sensing in birefringent media
A noninvasive polarimetric apparatus used to measure levels of a substance in a sample in the presence of dynamically changing sample birefringence is provided. A polarization system generates multiple states of polarized light which interact with the sample. An analyzer system receives a signal from the sample and generates a secondary signal. This signal is detected and then processed to measure levels of a substance in a sample that may be have time varying birefringent components.
