Polymers containing cross-linked azo bonds, which polymers are useful for releasing therapeutic agents into the lower gastrointestinal tract
Polymers from ethylenically unsaturated monomers, cross-linked by a substituted divinylazobenzene are useful as pharmaceutical compositions for the delivery of medicaments. In particular, the polymers contain divinylazobenzene compounds of the formulae ##STR1## wherein R1 and R2 are independently selected from the group consisting of H, (except that R1 and R2 are not both H), Cl, Br, I, NO2, NH2, RO, ArO, COOH or salts thereof, COOR, COOAr, CHO, COR, SO3 H or salts thereof, R or Ar and wherein R is alkyl of up to 18 carbon atoms and Ar is mono- or bicyclic aryl of up to 15 carbon atoms.
Method of use of polymers containing cross-linked azo bonds for releasing therapeutic agents into the lower gastrointestinal tract
Polymers from ethylenically unsaturated monomers, cross-linked by a substituted or unsubstituted divinylazobenzene are useful as carriers or capsules for medicaments, which are degraded by the enzymes of the upper gastrointestinal tract or which must be transferred intact past the upper gastrointestinal tract, to deliver the medicament to the large intestine.Polymers containing monomeric units of the formula H2 C?CH--C6 H4 --N?N--M,wherein M is the residue of an amino-containing medicament, are useful as carriers for therapeutic agents or as therapeutic agents per se.
Bilayer pellet containing immobilized xylose isomerase and urease for the simultaneous isomerization and fermentation of xylose to ethanol
A bilayered immobilized enzyme pellet and a process to manufacture this pellet are provided for use in a process involving the simultaneous isomerization of xylose to xylulose and fermentation of xylulose to ethanol. The bilayered pellet is able to maintain the environment where the isomerization reaction occurs within its optimum pH of 7.0 to 8.0 while the fermentation reaction occurs within its optimum pH range of 4.0 to 5.0. This process allows both xylose and glucose sugars to be effectively used as a feedstock for ethanol production by isomerizing the xylose to xylulose and then making the xylulose immediately available for the fermentation process. Because the xylose has been converted to its ketose isomer, xylulose, yeasts which can ferment glucose and xylulose can be used in this process.
