Highly selective anti-cancer agents targeting non-small cell lung cancer and other forms of cancer
Described herein are analogs of 2-methyl-3-(2-ethynylthiazol-4-yl)cyclopent-2-enol and the corresponding ketone 3-(2-ethynylthiazol-4-yl)-2-methylcyclopent-2-enone, the analogs having terminal alkyne groups at the 2-position of the thiazole ring. These drug-like molecules, referred to as CETZOLE compounds, are useful to treat non-small cell lung cancer and other forms of cancer. Methods of making and using the compounds, methods of treating various diseases, pharmaceutical compositions, and kits are also disclosed.
System for simultaneous isomerization and fermentation of sugars
Methods and systems for the isomerization and fermentation of xylose and hexose sugars using an immobilized enzyme system capable of sustaining two different pH microenvironments in a single vessel are disclosed. Bilayer particles are dispersed in a mixture comprising an ionic borate source and xylose. The bilayer particles have a first region with a first enzymatic activity comprising xylose isomerase and a pH of 6 or above, and a second region having a second enzymatic activity at an acidic pH.
Methods for high yield production of furans from biomass sugars at mild operating conditions
Facile methods for high-yield furfural and HMF production from biomass sugars are described. The methods generally involve converting the biomass sugars in high yield to their ketose isomers, resulting in furan production under low temperature and pressure conditions with efficient recycling of the process streams.
Inhibitors of ERCC1-XPF and methods of using the same
Compositions and methods for inhibiting the DNA repair protein complex, ERCC1-XPF, and methods to enhance clinical responses to anticancer drugs that interact with DNA such as cisplatin, and to overcome drug resistance due to DNA repair mechanisms, are described.
Ionically crosslinked polyelectrolytes as underwater adhesives as controlled release vehicles
Underwater adhesive materials, methods of making the same, and methods of using the same are described.
Bioactive fusion device
In a first broad aspect, there is provided herein a bioactive device and system for fusion between two bones, two parts of a bony joint, or a bony defect, such as of the spine. The fusion device includes a screw having a head and a threaded shaft. The fusion device also includes a bone dowel having an internal bore of which at least a distal portion is threaded to engage the threads of the screw shaft. The bone dowel is made of a bone-like, biocompatible, or allograft material to provide a layer of bone-like, biocompatible, or allograft material between the screw and the spinal bone. The device is generally coaxial and is further described in the drawings and description herein.
Thermal fractionation of biomass of non-lignocellulosic origin for multiple high-quality biofuels
Methods for production of multiple biofuels through thermal fractionation of biomass feedstocks are described. The products of said methods are also described.

Ultrastable silver nanoparticles, methods of making the same, and methods of using the same, are disclosed.
Concurrent delivery of interstitial thermobrachytherapy (hyperthermia and brachytherapy) in the treatment of cancer
A system combines hyperthermia and radiation treatments in a single treatment modality by using a radioactive seed having magnetic, ferromagnetic, or ferrimagnetic properties.
Bioactive fusion device
A fusion device includes a screw having a head and a shaft. A hollow bone dowel is disposed about the shaft of the screw. The bone dowel is formed from a bone-like, biocompatible, or allograft material.
Analogs of peroxisome proliferator activated receptor (PPAR) agonists, and methods of using the same
Analogs of PPAR5 and analogs of 20-OH-PGE2, which are PPAR5 agonists and 20-OH-PGE2 antagonists, respectively, and methods of using the same for inducing osteogenesis or chondrogenesis, are disclosed.
System for concurrent delivery of thermobrachytherapy in the treatment of cancers
A system combines hyperthermia and radiation treatments in a single treatment modality by using a radioactive seed having magnetic properties.
Standardized mixtures for assessing amounts of target nucleic acids in a sample, and kits therefore
Described herein are compositions for evaluating nucleic acids, standardized mixture for assessing amounts of at least one target nucleic acid in a sample, and kits comprising the same.
Electromagnetic polymer composite material for anti-fouling effect
The antifouling coating is a composite material consisting of fluorinated electroactive bipolymers and magnetic particles. This composite material is coated on a solid surface to make a smooth durable grassy coating. The coating generates electrical current when an electrolytic liquid flows over it, which prevents bacterial cells from attaching to the surface. It prevents virus and protein attachment. It also prevents chemical corrosion of a surface. The composite material itself, and the antifouling method that uses fluoride compounds and electrical current that is generated by the fluid flow are disclosed for a patent. The composite material can be applied to medical devices, biomedical devices, industrial equipment, ship's hulls, food processing equipment, food processors, drinking water distribution systems, and home electrical appliances.
