Improving efficacy of cancer therapy
Embodiments of the invention provide a method of improving the efficacy of an anti-cancer therapy and a method of treatment of cancer by normalizing angiogenesis in cancer. By enhancing the cell signaling pathway via a TRPV4 receptor in tumor endothelial cells, either by a TRPV4 agonist or by increasing the expression of TRPV4 in the tumor endothelial cells, the tumor endothelial cells behave normally and form normal angiogenic network for better anti-cancer therapy to the tumors.
Compositions of standardized mixtures for determining an amount of a nucleic acid
The present invention is directed to methods and compositions for evaluating nucleic acids, methods of preparing such compositions, and applications and business methods employing such compositions and methods. In particular, the present invention provides business methods for operating a gene expression measurement service.
Core muscle strengthening
The method and system of this invention provides for core muscle strengthening. The method comprises the step of: providing an apparatus (10) that provides resistance and assistance during core muscle training using dynamic therapeutic movement for chest, back, abdominal and leg musculature to strengthen and condition muscles of the axial skeleton and lower extremities of a performing user. In one embodiment, the method also is for non-invasive physical therapy.
Methods for synthesizing glycinols, glyceollins I and II, compositions of selected intermediates, and therapeutic uses thereof
Two distinct methods are disclosed and claimed for synthesizing glyceollin I plus glyceollin II as a mixture and as their pure forms. Stereochemical isomers and various synthetic intermediates are also synthesized and claimed for their novel compositions of matter. All compounds and their mixtures are claimed for use in formulations that are useful to treat or prevent cancer, or that have utility as selective estrogen receptor modulators, such formulations including enhanced or medical foods, dietary supplements and ethical pharmaceutical agents.
Biomass pretreatment
The present invention relates to a method for lignocellulosic conversion to sugar using an ionic liquid pretreatment for the saccharification of lignocellulosic biomass. Thus, cellulose, hemicellulose, when hydrolyzed into their sugars, can be converted to ethanol fuel through well-established fermentation technologies. These sugars also form the feedstocks for production of a variety of chemical and polymers. The complex structure of the biomass required pretreatment to enable efficient saccharification of cellulose and hemicellulose components to their constituent sugars.

Expanding multi-lumen applicator operating within a balloon
A brachytherapy apparatus includes a distal support member and a proximal support member movable relative to the distal support member. The apparatus includes a plurality of elongate treatment members having distal first locations coupled to the distal support member, proximal second locations coupled to the proximal support member, and pathways between the proximal second locations and the distal first locations adapted to receive one or more radiation sources. Each of the treatment members is movable between a generally straight configuration and a curvilinear configuration. An expandable member encloses and provides a spatial volume for the plurality of the treatment members and is adjustable between a contracted configuration and an expanded configuration.
Plants expressing environmental stress tolerances having petunia CBF genes therein
The present invention provides a method of controlling a plant's tolerance to environmental stress and to a transgenic plant having the desired characteristics.
Biomass pretreatment
A method for lignocellulose conversion to sugar with improvements in yield and rate of sugar production has been developed by using ionic liquid pretreatment. This new pretreatment strategy substantially improves the efficiency (in terms of yield and reaction rates) of saccharification of lignocellulosic biomass. Cellulose and hemicellulose, when hydrolyzed into their sugars, can be converted into ethanol fuel through well established fermentation technologies. These sugars also form the feedstocks for production of variety of chemicals and polymers. The complex structure of biomass requires proper pretreatment to enable efficient saccharification of cellulose and hemicellulose components to their constituent sugars. Current pretreatment approaches suffer from slow reaction rates of cellulose hydrolysis (by using the enzyme cellulase) and low yields.
Trunk rotation
This trunk rotation device uses dynamic movement of one's body such as, shoulder, hip, knee, back, thigh, and abdominal musculature. The device provides a method for exercising the spinal column and the muscles of the torso, including those in the abdominal lumbar and thoracic regions involving rotational torque. In a preferred embodiment, the device is a golf exercise and flexibility apparatus. The golf exercise apparatus provides resistance to a golfer during a golf swing to strengthen and condition the muscles of the axial skeleton of the golfer in a functional posture.

Energy storage system with ultracapacitor and switched battery
An energy storage system for a vehicle includes an ultracapacitor that is electrically coupled in parallel with a battery through a diode connected in series with the battery. The ultracapacitor delivers the energy required for all high current surges that occur during engine start, acceleration, and regeneration. The battery is used only to assist with longer duration, high energy loads, such as accessory loads when an engine of the vehicle is not running. In other words, the battery conducts only during longer and less-frequent pulses and, therefore, does not have to withstand high-power pulses.
Albumin-based colloid composition and method of use in treating hypovolemia and multiorgan dysfunction
A composition comprising an albumin-based colloid and its use in treating hypovolemic conditions such as capillary leak syndrome and shock are disclosed.
Modified plasminogen activator inhibitor type-1 and methods based thereon
The present invention is based upon the discovery that modified plasminogen activator inhibitor type-I (PAI-1) in which two or more amino acid residues that do not contain a sulfhydryl group have been replaced with amino acid residues that contain a sulfhydryl group and, therefore, forms intramolecular disulfide bonds, have increased in vivo half-life. Also disclosed are the modified PAI-1 proteins, derivatives and analogs thereof, specific antibodies, nucleic acid molecules and host cells. Methods for producing modified PAI-1, derivatives and analogs are also provided. The invention further relates to Therapeutics, pharmaceutical compositions and method of using the composition for treatment. The invention may be used to inhibit angiogenesis in a subject, thereby treating diseases or conditions associated with undesired angiogenesis and cell proliferation. Such conditions include psoriasis, chronic inflammation, tumor invasion and metastasis and conditions in which angiogenesis is pathogenic. The modifide PAI-1 molecules of the present invention are useful for the treatment, prophylaxis, management and amelioration of cardiovascular diseases such as, but not limited to those that are related to hyperfibrinolysis, hemophilia, and vessel leakage syndrome.
