Disability Rights

This chapter explores the roots of disability rights reforms during the Progressive Era as charities and non-profits formed to provide services to the disabled. It continues with landmark legislation in the Architectural Barriers Act of 1964, the fight for the Americans with Disabilities Act in the 1980s and its pivotal moment on March 12, 1990 with the Capitol Crawl when 60 activists left their wheelchairs to crawl the 83 steps of the Capitol building chanting their support for the ADA, which passed into law on July 26, 1990.
