Abstract/Description: Fe2O3 - Mohs Hardness: 5 - 6 1/2. Hematite is the world's most important ore of iron, the main ingredient in steel. Pure iron being quite soft is most commonly combined with alloying elements to make steel, carbon being the most important. Major producers of hematite include China, Australia, Brazil, India, Russia, South Africa, and the United States. US production occurs in Michigan and Minnesota.
