Health Education Center and Snyder Memorial

HEALTH EDUCATION CENTER - Year of Construction: 1967; $1,700,000. Architects: Britsch, Macelwane, Poseler and Lubeck.. The Health Education Center was originally built to house the physical education division of the College of Education, which offered physical and health education programs at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral level. The building also served as the campus recreation center until the current Student Recreation Center opened in 1990. The facility continues to be used for general recreational activities, the UT dance program, and some intramural programs. Some of the amenities include courts for handball, racquetball, basketball, tennis, and volleyball, as well as a running track, swimming pool, and dance studios. The Health Education Center hosts the National Youth Sports Program each summer and is also the home of the University's Army ROTC program. SNYDER MEMORIAL - Year of Construction: 1964; $1.64 million. Architects: Richards, Bauer, & Moorhead. Snyder Memorial was originally used as an academic building. It housed the College of Education and offices for graduate school, as well as a computer center and the University Bookstore. It was the first building on campus to be completely financed by private financial donations. The building was named after Mrs. Grace A. Snyder and her husband, Walter B. Snyder. The Snyders established a fund after speaking with an articulate, enthusiastic student volunteer about the need for a University of Toledo construction bond. The student is referred to as an "Unknown Hero" by Mrs. Snyder's will. The building now houses the Study Abroad Department, as well as a variety of classrooms.
