<strong>Exhibit label:</strong>Letter from A. Monroe Stowe to Mary Gillham, University Librarian (1943). Stowe established the first University Library after an agreement with the City Library Board to provide the service fell through. He appointed Millie Smith as acting librarian, who served seven months before Mary Gillham, a student at the time, stepped in and held the position for 48 years.  In this letter, Stowe thanked Gillham for a copy of Frank Hickerson's student dissertation on the history of the University of Toledo. Hickerson would later write the centennial history of UToledo: The Tower Builders, published in 1972.
