<strong>Exhibit labels:</strong>[1] Commencement Program for Toledo University and the Manual Training School (June, 1897)[2] Toledo University of Arts and Trades, Articles of Incorporation, 1872. The Articles of Incorporation for Toledo University of arts and Trades were drawn up on October 12, 1872.  Sarah R. L. Williams was the one of the seven that appeared in the Articles, being the first woman to serve on the original board.  In 1884, after the establishment of the Manual Training School, Williams and some local suffragettes were concerned about there being no provision for admitting women.  She chaired a committee to investigate and accused the board of discrimination. On October 23, 1884, a resolution was adopted to admit women to the school and an appropriate course of study developed. (front of case)[3] First Annual Report of the Manual Training School, 1885. The Manual Training School  was the first department of the Toledo University of the City of Toledo.  Its objective was to provide instruction and practice in the use of tools used in many vocations, including carpentry, wood turning, brazing and soldering "and such other instruction of a similar character as may be deemed advisable..."
