Abstract

PbS – Mohs Hardness: 2½ - 3. Galena is the primary ore of lead, and an important source of silver. In some deposits galena contains 1-2 percent silver, a byproduct that far outweighs its lead value. Lead’s main use is in the production of lead-acid batteries, invented in 1859 and still used in motor vehicles. Galena is found worldwide.
